On October 17th Accoutrements celebrated legalization in a very special way. By giving back to women most in need in our community and serving 622 meals. The #QueenCampaign raised $1245 dollars for Sistering exceeding our campaign goal by $245 and was supported by men and women across Canada.
Our founder, Heidi Fortes personally visited Sistering during and after the campaign and sat down with Patricia O'Connell, Executive Director and Marian Lupu, Fund Development Associate to chat about the important work being done at Sistering.
"No one ever imagines their journey in life to involve homelessness or living in isolation and poverty. But the reality is that there are many women in our community who walk through the door of Sistering looking for a safe environment where they can rest, access healthy meals and enjoy social interactions."
By the numbers:
Sistering supports women from across Toronto who experience first hand the impact of marginalization and poverty. They are a diverse group, from 16 to 80-plus years old: women with substance use or complex mental health issues; sex workers; women who have experienced or are experiencing trauma and violence; immigrant and refugee women; women with disabilities and women without legal status.
The programs and work that happen at Sistering give women a caring and safe environment where they will find respect, dignity a community of new friends and the support they need to make a change.
Sistering is a registered charity and counts on donations and support from the community. To donate this holiday season please visit sistering.org/donate.
